‘Kaprys Polski’
Caprice, or Capriccio, is most often described as a single-movement piece, sometimes divided into varied sections. This gives the composer a great deal of freedom within the structure of the Caprice, and Bacewicz used this style on multiple occasions. Bacewicz wrote three solo violin Caprices in 1949, 1952, and 1968. Folk melodies were long a staple of classical music from this region of Europe, so it was natural for Bacewicz to draw heavily from her national songbook for her compositions, of which this Caprice is no exception. This short composition, Kaprys Polski (Polish Caprice), offers a diverse range of colors and sounds with Bacewicz’s characteristic twists, which has given it a position on many programs to the present day. Bacewicz experiments with tonality and sonority, and gives the music a sound which shares many characteristics with Polish folk music.
